Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
At Trunkey Public School, we are thrilled to see the practical impact the Second Step program has made in our classrooms and playground. This innovative program nurtures social and emotional awareness and skills for learning.
The research-based Second Step program assists teachers to integrate social-emotional learning into their classrooms, which decreases negative behaviours and increases whole-school success by promoting self-regulation, safety and support for every student.
The 5 Core Competencies for Social-Emotional Learning
Self-awareness: Know your strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism and a growth mindset.
Self-management: Effectively manage stress, control impulses and motivate yourself to set and achieve goals.
Social awareness: Understand the perspectives of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Relationship skills: Communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively and seek and offer help when needed.
Responsible decision-making: Make constructive choices about personal behaviour and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety and social norms.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
