Image: Sadako and Kenji train in the park every day. She is a very fast runner and Kenji is an excellent athlete and a talented trainer.
Image: Sadako's mother prepares for Oban, the day of the spirits. "On this day we light candles for our ancestors who have died and ask them to join in our celebration of life," she tells her daughter.
Image: Sadako's family is shattered when they learn that their daughter is very ill with Leukemia, caused by the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima ten years earlier.
Image: The nursing staff run tests, x-ray her chest and call the specialist. Despite their efforts, Sadako seems to be getting worse.
Image: Kenji has a wonderful idea to raise Sadako's spirits. He tells her to fold one thousand paper cranes. This keeps her occupied whilst in hospital and gives her something positive to focus on.
Image: Whilst folding paper cranes, Sadako is surprised to see her Grandmother, Oba Chan, appear in her hospital room.
Image: Oba Chan beckons Sadako to follow her to the mountains and rivers of their ancestors.

Image: Whilst on their long journey they are treated to a spectacular ribbon dance performed by spirit ancestors.
Image: Mr Araki, a spirit ancestor, who was building fire lanes in Japan when the bomb hit, tells Sadako of his memories of the day the bomb hit.
Image: Mrs Watanabe also joins them, telling Sadako of her experience on that fateful day.
Image: The spirit ancestor, Daisuke, tells Sadako that he was seven years old when the bomb hit. He'd been studying hard for examinations and when he looked up the sky was on fire.
Image: Kenji arrives back at the hospital t find that Sadako's bed is empty.
Image: Just as he realises the significance of this, he folds the very last paper crane to make one thousand.
