Our extra-curricular highlights
School sport
Our school sports program offers exciting opportunities for our students to develop their skills, teamwork and sportsmanship across a range of popular sports including netball, basketball, tennis, cricket, swimming and soccer. Through regular Friday sports sessions, our students stay active, build confidence and enjoy the spirit of friendly competition. Our school's sports program promotes inclusivity and enjoyment of physical activity, encouraging all students to participate and challenge themselves.
Our Learn to Swim Program is held bi-annually, over ten consecutive days at the start of Term 4.
PSSA sport representation
Our Heritage Country Small Schools' swimming and athletics carnivals, PSSA district, regional and state carnivals are opportunities for our talented sportspeople to refine their skills, challenge themselves even further and to represent our school at a more challenging level. Traditionally, our school boasts a strong track record in athletics.
Leadership
Our school leaders have many incredible opportunities to develop their leadership skills in a huge variety of settings. Highlights being attending the Halogen National Young Leaders Day and our Heritage Country Small Schools Leaders Luncheon.
Creative and performing arts
Our drama, music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. They can join in concerts, art shows and drama activities.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
Environmental Education Programs
At Trunkey Public School, our staff and students are passionate about caring for the environment and making a positive impact in our community. We care about and protect our native endangered flora and fauna of the Abercrombie region, create habitats and nesting boxes for local wildlife such as birds, sugar gliders, lizards and frogs, and maintain our school's beautiful native gardens. Through various sustainability projects, we learn, take action, and share our knowledge with students from the Heritage Country small schools to protect biodiversity and help build a greener future.
Aboriginal Education Programs
Aboriginal Education holds significant value in fostering a deeper understanding and respect for the rich cultures, histories and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples among students in our school.
At Trunkey Public School, we incorporate Aboriginal perspectives across the curriculum in KLA's such as history, geography, literature, art and science. We celebrate key cultural events such as NAIDOC Day, Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week with school-wide activities. Our students participate in various art and cultural programs, such as 'The Home Project' and 'The Diorama Project,' incorporating local Aboriginal elders and knowledge holders to share stories, culture and language with our students.
Ukulele Program
Our ukulele program is a much loved part of our music program at Trunkey Public School. It allows the students to take the theory they have learnt in music lessons and apply it in practice on an instrument. During ukulele lessons our students practice strumming and picking, learning chords, playing the beat or rhythm of songs and playing together with other students.
In 2024 the students learnt the song "You've Got a Friend in Me" and performed it as a K-6 group at our presentation night.
